Prime Video’s highly anticipated God of War TV series has hit a major roadblock, raising concerns about the future of the project.
The live-action adaptation of Santa Monica Studio’s acclaimed 2018 video game is now undergoing a complete creative reset following the departure of the showrunner and executive producer.
Why the Complete Reset?
According to a report from Variety, Prime Video has decided to take the God of War series in an entirely “new creative direction.”
This unexpected decision has led to the departure of several key figures, including showrunner and executive producer Rafe Judkins, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus.
Before this shift, the team had reportedly completed multiple scripts for the series. However, Amazon and Sony Pictures were not satisfied with it and decided to discard it, opting for a fresh start instead.
Despite the creative shakeup, not all hope is lost for fans of the franchise. Santa Monica Studios’ creative director Cory Barlog, a key figure behind the game’s success, remains on board as an executive producer.
Additionally, Yumi Yang from Santa Monica Studios, along with Asad Qizilbash from PlayStation Productions and Roy Lee from Vertigo, are still attached to the project.
It’s also worth noting that Judkins previously worked on the 2022 film Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, another adaptation of a PlayStation video game franchise. While Uncharted received mixed reviews, it resonated with audiences and grossed over $400 million at the box office. A sequel has already been confirmed by Sony executives, showcasing the confidence of the studio on the project.
When Can We Expect Its Release?
With this major setback, the timeline for the God of War series has now become uncertain.
Originally announced in 2022 without a release date, the project is now essentially back to square one. Given the need to bring in new leadership, rewrite the scripts, and eventually begin filming, followed by post-production, the series may not hit screens until 2028 or even later.
Prime Video recently enjoyed massive success with its Fallout series, and it seems they are aiming to replicate that achievement with God of War with a careful approach.
Hopefully, this decision will lead to a God of War series that both new viewers and longtime fans can enjoy.
Update on 24 October: According to Variety, the series got Ronald D. Moore as the new writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Moore’s previous tenure at Sony spanned a decade, during which he produced acclaimed series such as “Outlander” and “For All Mankind.” Moore’s notable contributions to the “Star Trek” franchise include his work on “The Next Generation,” “Voyager,” and “Deep Space Nine,” as well as his screenwriting for “Star Trek: Generations” and “Star Trek: First Contact.” He is widely recognized for his revival of “Battlestar Galactica,” which aired for four seasons on the Syfy.
Additional God of War News
In other God of War news, rumors are circulating that the original games may be re-released in a remastered collection to celebrate the franchise’s 20th anniversary.
Additionally, Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War: Ragnarok will be enhanced for the PS5 Pro console.
Meanwhile, God of War: Ragnarok officially launched on Steam on September 19. However, its release has been somewhat underwhelming, with just over 35,000 concurrent players (CCP) at launch, which is half the number compared to its 2018 predecessor, God of War, which launched on Steam in 2022, with over 73,000 CCP.
The recent job listing has also caught the attention of eagle-eyed fans, stating that the studio is hiring a ‘Senior External Development Environment Artist‘ for a ‘next-generation narrative combat game.’ Many predict it’s a complete “New IP,” while others claim it’s the next GOW game; the studio has remained silent on the matter.
