Phil Spencer on Xbox’s Future: No Red Lines for Game Ports and New Hardware

In recent interviews, Xbox’s head Phil Spencer shared exciting developments about the company’s future direction, touching on game ports to other platforms, a potential handheld device, and the status of Black Myth: Wukong for Xbox users.

Opening Doors to Other Platforms

Speaking with Bloomberg, Spencer revealed some surprising news about Xbox’s approach to releasing games on other platforms. The company’s recent experiment of bringing games like Sea of Thieves and Hi-Fi Rush to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch has been successful, leading to an even bolder strategy moving forward.

What’s particularly interesting is Spencer’s openness to considering any Xbox game for other platforms. “There are no red lines in our portfolio,” he explained, suggesting that even beloved franchises aren’t necessarily locked to Xbox anymore.

While discussing the possibility of Halo appearing on other consoles, Spencer maintained a cautious tone, stating it’s “too early” to make decisions about the series’ next entry.

Xbox’s Handheld Gaming Future

The conversation then turned to an exciting hardware announcement. Spencer confirmed that Xbox is actively working on entering the handheld gaming market, which has seen remarkable growth thanks to devices like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck.

Rather than rushing into production, Xbox is taking a measured approach. The team is currently developing prototypes and studying the market to ensure they create something truly valuable for players.

However, gaming fans will need to be patient – Spencer mentioned that the device is still “a few years out” from release.

The Black Myth: Wukong Situation

In a separate interview with Game File’s Stephen Totilo, Spencer addressed questions about Black Myth: Wukong, one of 2024’s biggest gaming releases that launched on PS5 and PC but hasn’t appeared on Xbox yet.

When asked directly if he knew whether the game was coming to Xbox, Spencer’s response was intriguing. With a laugh, he confirmed he knew the answer but couldn’t make any announcements. This playful response has led many industry observers to speculate that an Xbox version might be in the works, possibly with an announcement coming at this year’s Game Awards.

The gaming industry continues to watch Xbox’s moves with interest, as these decisions could influence how other companies approach platform exclusivity and hardware development in the future.
