The cooperative horror game Phasmophobia reached to new milestone selling 2 million units on consoles since its October 2024 launch. Overall the game now reached 22 million players on all platforms [20 million on PC & 2 million on console].

This indie phenomenon, which began as a solo project by developer Daniel Knight, has evolved into one of gaming’s most notable success stories. After its initial Steam release in September 2020, Phasmophobia quickly gained traction, eventually winning “Best Debut Game” at The Game Awards 2020. Streamers further boosted its popularity as it became Twitch’s most-watched game that year, attracting over 247,000 viewers and outperforming major titles like Star Wars: Squadrons.

Now, the release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S has proven successful for the titles, adding over one million sales in just 35 days, and another million two months later.

Regular content updates and seasonal events have also helped maintain player engagement, with the recent Crimson Eye Halloween event contributing significantly to the game’s growing player base.

Building on this momentum, Kinetic Games has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for 2025, detailing several major updates and improvements. The developer’s website outlines key upcoming features:

The Chronicle Update:

  • New media system replacing the current Photos tab
  • Expanded evidence recording capabilities including videos and sound
  • Additional undisclosed features planned for later reveal

Map Improvements:

  • Complete rework of three classic locations: Bleasdale Farmhouse (March 2025 release), 6 Tanglewood Drive and Grafton Farmhouse
  • Introduction of a new small-scale map
  • Focus on detailed visual overhauls and layout refinements

The studio has also confirmed that future maps will be “relatively small” to enable more frequent releases.

Looking beyond 2025, the development team has already begun work on the significant Horror 2.0 update planned for 2026. While full character customization features have been postponed to accommodate this major update, the team is currently focused on refreshing character models and improving animations.
