Olympic Esports Games Reportedly Postponed to 2026 or 2027

Olympic Games

The much-anticipated inaugural Olympic Esports Games, initially planned for 2025 in Saudi Arabia, has been postponed. According to a report by SportBusiness, the event is now expected to be held in either 2026 or 2027.

One of the primary reasons for the delay lies in the complexities of integrating esports into the Olympic framework. Unlike traditional sports, esports does not align well with existing structures like National Olympic Committees and International Federations. This misalignment has created significant hurdles in planning and execution.

Other Reasons Behind the Delay

Key factors have contributed to the decision to postpone the Olympic Esports Games:

  • Unclear Event Details: Critical aspects such as the game titles to be featured, tournament venues, and specific dates were not finalized.
  • Qualification Challenges: The absence of a transparent and fair qualification process for athletes has raised concerns within the esports community.
  • Feedback from Publishers: Game publishers reportedly urged organizers to allow more time to ensure the event’s success.

While the Olympics have not officially made any confirmation regarding the new dates, it is widely speculated that the games will now take place in 2026 or 2027.

The IOC’s Focus Moving Forward

To address these challenges, reports suggest that the IOC is collaborating with the International Esports Federation (IESF) to develop a stronger foundation for the event. Their priorities include:

  • Finalizing Game Titles: Selecting diverse and globally popular esports titles to represent the international gaming community.
  • Securing World-Class Venues: Ensuring top-notch facilities for hosting the competitions in Saudi Arabia.
  • Streamlining Qualification Processes: Establishing clear and fair pathways for athletes to qualify.
  • Enhancing Financial Planning: Securing necessary investments to deliver a high-quality event.

While this decision might disappoint fans and athletes eager for the 2025 event, the additional preparation time could result in a more inclusive and well-organized tournament. However, esports fans still have plenty of action to look forward to, with multi-game tournaments like the Esports World Cup returning for its second season. Hero Esports has also announced a similar tournament, the Asian Champion League (ACL), and the South East Asian (SEA) Games will return in Thailand with MLBB as the main title.
