Nintendo has officially announced its next-generation gaming console, the Nintendo Switch 2, with a trailer offering a first look at this exciting new hardware. Set to launch in 2025, this marks the first time Nintendo has used a straightforward numerical naming convention for a console. Unlike the Super NES or the Wii U, the “Switch 2” name clearly signals its role as a successor to the original Switch.
What’s New in the Switch 2?
The trailer, while light on specific hardware details, teased several significant design changes. It opened by showing the original 2017 Nintendo Switch, which gradually transformed into the Switch 2. This transition highlighted its larger size, sleek black controllers, and a more robust, versatile kickstand.
One notable change is in the controllers, which now snap onto the sides of the console differently, moving away from the rail-based attachment seen on the original Switch. This update hints at a more modern and user-friendly design.
Backward Compatibility and Game Support
Nintendo confirmed that the Switch 2 will support both digital and physical games from its predecessor, ensuring players can continue enjoying their existing library. However, it was noted that “certain” titles may face compatibility issues.
Mario Kart and the Legacy of the Franchise
The reveal trailer also showcased the Switch 2 running a new Mario Kart game, exciting news for fans of the series.
Mario Kart has been a standout success for Nintendo. Mario Kart 8 has sold over 64 million copies on the original Switch and nearly 8.5 million on the Wii U, cementing its status as one of the best-selling games of all time. While a mobile version also exists, it received its final content update over a year ago, making the new installment highly anticipated.
Fans can look forward to a deeper dive into the console’s features and games during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation on April 2, 2025.
