Nintendo recently revealed its financial results for the first quarter (Q1) of FY 2024-2025, starting from April 1, 2024.
According to reports, Nintendo Switch sold over 2.1 million units in these three months, bringing its total global sales to 143.42 million units.
While this represents a decrease from the 3.91 million units sold in the same period last year, it’s still an impressive feat for a console nearing the end of its lifecycle, especially as Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has previously hinted at a “new model“ in the works.
Breaking down the sales:
- 530,000 classic Switch
- 330,000 Switch Lite
- 1.24 million Switch OLED
Nintendo projects that by March 31, 2025, around 13.5 million Switch units could be sold, including the Lite Hyrule Edition model. However, given the current trend of declining sales each quarter, achieving this projection might be challenging unless the new model is released earlier than expected.
But, If this milestone is reached, the Nintendo Switch range will reach 155 million sales, matching the level of the Nintendo DS sales.
How Did Nintendo’s Game Perform?
On the gaming front, Nintendo sold over 30.64 million copies during this quarter, bringing the total Nintendo game sales to 1.2 billion.
While these numbers are impressive, they represent a significant drop from the 52.2 million copies sold in Q1 2023.
This decrease can be attributed to the absence of a blockbuster release like “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” or the cross-media boost from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in the previous year.
What Are the Top-Selling First-Party Nintendo Games?
The top 10 first-party games remained unchanged, with “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” still leading the pack, selling nearly a million copies (930,000) this quarter to reach a total of 62.90 million units. Here’s a quick look at the rankings:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 62.90 million
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 45.85 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 34.66 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 32.05 million
- Super Mario Odyssey – 28.21 million
- Pokémon Sword and Shield – 26.35 million
- Pokémon Scarlet and Violet – 25.29 million
- Super Mario Party – 20.84 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – 20.80 million
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 17.61 million
Interestingly, “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” sold 190,000 units, which is only slightly less than “Breath of the Wild,” despite the latter being seven years old.
The Pokémon titles also continued to perform well, with both generations exceeding 25 million sales, including nearly 400,000 sales for “Scarlet and Violet.”
How Did New Releases Perform?
Three titles were released over this period: the adventure simulation game “Endless Ocean: Luminous” developed by Arika, and two remakes, “Paper Mario: The Millennium Gate” and “Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD.”
The Mario Universe performed well with 1.76 million sales for “Paper Mario: The Millennium Gate,” while “Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD” sold 1.19 million units in just four days.
However, there was no news on the sales of “Endless Ocean: Luminous,” which probably did not cross the million mark this quarter.
“Princess Peach: Showtime,” which was released just before the beginning of the quarter on March 22, also sold an impressive 1.3 million units.

- Emio – The Man with the Smile: Famicom Detective Club (August 29, 2024)
- The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (September 26, 2024)
- Super Mario Party Jamboree (October 17, 2024)
- Mario & Luigi: The Sibling Epic (November 7, 2024)
- Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (January 16, 2025)
How Is Nintendo’s Financial Health?
Despite the notable hardware and software sales, Nintendo reported a 46.5% drop in net sales and a 70.6% decline in operating profit.
However, Nintendo remains optimistic and hasn’t revised its forecasts for the fiscal year 2025. The company seems poised for stability, especially with the anticipated launch of its new console – Switch 2, and new releases especially The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
The next review (Q2 of 2025), which will be held at the beginning of November, will tell us about the performance of the Nintendo Switch in July, August, and September.
