Nexon to Shut Down Metaverse Platform ‘Nexon Town’ Due to Low User Engagement

Nexon Town

Nexon, the well-known South Korean gaming company, has announced the termination of its metaverse platform “Nexon Town,” citing low user engagement as the primary reason. The platform, which was launched as a trial service in 2022, will officially shut down on March 13, 2025, according to an announcement made on Nexon’s official website.

Nexon Town allowed users to interact in virtual spaces such as plazas, classrooms, campgrounds, and conference rooms. Users could customize their avatars using popular characters from Nexon’s hit games like Mabinogi, MapleStory, Bubble Fighter, and Crazy Arcade. The platform gained additional recognition by hosting a virtual promotional hall for the 2022 G-STAR gaming exhibition, further showcasing its potential.

Despite its promising start, Nexon Town struggled to maintain user interest over time. The number of active users began to decline significantly, and the platform lacked regular updates to sustain engagement. This stagnation led to a state where the platform was largely inactive, eventually prompting Nexon to make the difficult decision to discontinue the service.

“We deeply appreciate the support of our users who participated in Nexon Town. However, after careful consideration, we concluded that it is no longer feasible to continue the service,” Nexon stated in its official announcement.

The closure of Nexon Town highlights the challenges faced by companies venturing into the metaverse space. While the concept of virtual interaction holds immense potential, sustaining user interest and engagement remains a significant hurdle for many platforms.

Nexon has not disclosed any immediate plans for future metaverse-related projects.
