Nexon Cancels Warhammer RPG Collaboration with Thought Pennies

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar

Nexon, the South Korean developer and publisher, has canceled the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar RPG that was being developed by studio Thought Pennies.

The reports emerged earlier this month, as reported by MP1st, indicating that the unannounced “multiplatform, social role-playing game” was canceled after several years of development. At that time, specific details about the project or the reasons behind its cancellation were not disclosed. However, subsequent reports from Eurogamer now suggested it was the publisher’s withdrawal that led to the project’s discontinuation.

The project, which was planned for release across PC, consoles, and mobile platforms, came to a halt following what Thought Pennies describes as a “strategic change” by Nexon. “While the partnership worked well and we got a lot of good input from Nexon, late last year we agreed to end the project,” a Thought Pennies spokesperson told Eurogamer.

The game was originally announced in 2021 as a PvE (Player versus Environment) social multiplayer title. It aimed to create an interactive world with ongoing content updates and services supported by Nexon’s live operations team. The story would have taken place in the Mortal Realms, a setting ravaged by Chaos Gods where players would lead the forces of the God-king Sigmar to restore order.

Players would have been able to:

  • Collect unique characters each season
  • Enter new realms
  • Customize their characters
  • Work together to reclaim parts of the Realms

This cancellation follows a series of layoffs at Thought Pennies in November when the studio lost funding for what was then an unnamed project. The studio’s Chief Creative Officer, Daniel Erickson, mentioned at the time that a publisher had chosen to pursue a new strategic direction.

The timing of this cancellation is particularly notable given the recent successes in the Warhammer franchise. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II has attracted 6 million players since its September 2024 launch, while Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has sold 1 million copies. Games Workshop, the owner of the Warhammer franchise, continues to expand its presence in gaming and entertainment, including recent plans with Amazon Studios to bring Warhammer 40,000 to film and television.

While the Age of Sigmar setting has had fewer video game adaptations compared to Warhammer 40,000, it has seen some releases, including Frontier’s Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin in 2023. However, another Age of Sigmar game, Soul Arena, was also recently canceled.
