The Resident Evil franchise is getting another chance at a live-action adaptation, and this time, it seems promising. After several failed attempts, this reboot aims to honor the original survival horror vibe of the iconic video games. With seasoned filmmakers and a competitive bidding war among top studios, fans might finally get a movie that does justice to the series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the reboot will be produced by Constantin Film, the studio behind the previous Resident Evil films, in collaboration with PlayStation Productions. The latter’s involvement has surprised many, as Resident Evil is traditionally a Capcom property.
The project will be led by Zach Cregger, the writer-director behind the acclaimed horror film Barbarian. Cregger, whose upcoming film Weapons has generated significant buzz due to positive test screenings, has established himself as a rising talent in the horror genre. Co-writing alongside Cregger is Shay Hatten, known for his work on John Wick 4 and Army of the Dead.
Currently, four major companies, including Netflix and Warner Bros., are engaged in a bidding war to acquire the film rights. The excitement stems from Cregger’s vision for the movie, which aims to stay true to the franchise’s original tone. Early Resident Evil games, released in the 1990s, focused heavily on survival horror, unlike the action-heavy approach of recent titles.
The earlier Resident Evil films, starring Milla Jovovich, blended horror, action, and sci-fi, grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide in total. However, they deviated significantly from the games’ narrative. Cregger’s reboot intends to bring the story back to its roots, emphasizing fear and suspense rather than action.
As fans eagerly await more details, the reboot’s development marks a fresh start for the franchise.
