A Video Game Fight Turned Real: Man Flies to Florida to Attack Another Gamer over Online Dispute in ArcheAge

ArcheAge kang hammer

A gamer from New Jersey got so mad at another player, he flew to Florida and attacked him with a hammer! Can you believe it? This scary event shows how online arguments can get way out of hand.

The attacker, Edward Kang, is only 20 years old. He traveled all the way from New Jersey to Florida, supposedly to visit a “friend” he met while playing ArcheAge, a fantasy game. But Kang had other plans.

In the middle of the night, Kang snuck into the victim’s house. When the victim came out of his bedroom, Kang hit him on the head with a hammer! Luckily, the victim’s stepfather heard the commotion and helped stop the attack.

The victim ended up in the hospital, but he’ll be okay. Kang, on the other hand, is in big trouble. He’s facing serious charges and might spend a long time in jail.

What Game Led to This Violent Confrontation?

The dispute originated from ArcheAge, a medieval fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).

While the exact nature of their dispute still remains unclear, interestingly, the game’s publisher had announced in April that it would be shutting down servers in Europe and North America on June 27 due to declining player numbers.

This impending shutdown may have contributed to heightened tensions among players.

The Sequence of Events

  1. Kang flew from Newark, New Jersey, to Jacksonville, Florida, last Thursday.
  2. He told his mother he was visiting a friend he met online while playing a video game.
  3. Upon arrival, Kang took an Uber to a hotel in Fernandina Beach, about 35 miles north of Jacksonville.
  4. He purchased a hammer at a local hardware store.
  5. Around 2 a.m. on Sunday, Kang allegedly entered the victim’s unlocked home in Fernandina Beach.
  6. When the victim emerged from his bedroom, Kang attacked him with a hammer.
  7. Kang allegedly hit the victim on the head with the hammer.
  8. A struggle ensued, during which the victim called for help.
  9. The victim’s stepfather intervened and helped restrain Kang until police arrived.

What Were the Consequences of the Attack?

The consequences of this incident are severe for both the victim and the alleged attacker:

For the Victim:

  • Suffered several head wounds (not life-threatening)
  • Received staples at the hospital

For Edward Kang:

  • Charged with attempted second-degree murder and armed burglary with a mask
  • Being held without bond
  • Facing potentially lengthy jail time

What Did Law Enforcement Say About the Incident?

Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper expressed disbelief at the nature of the crime, stating, “I just want to let you know, this is a weird one. Some things you just can’t make up.”

According to officials, Kang allegedly defended his actions, telling police that the victim was a very “bad person online” before asking how much jail time he was facing.

Leeper addressed Kang, saying, “I would say, Mr. Kang, it’s going to be a long time before you play video games again.”

What do you think about this crazy situation? Have you ever seen online arguments get out of control like this?
