New Game Publisher “The CoLab” Launches with Focus on Developer Collaboration

There’s a new indie game publisher on the scene! The CoLab has officially launched in the UK, and instead of competing with developers, they’re all about collaboration.

Founded by three gaming industry veterans—Darren Newnham (ex-United Label CEO), Mark Faulkner (ex-Jagex director), and John Lewis (ex-Codemasters art director)—the company wants to create a more supportive space for game creators, especially in today’s tough industry climate.

“We stand for cooperation and collaboration in an industry that desperately needs it,” said Newnham, who’s taking the role of CEO. The team came together in response to industry-wide issues like mass layoffs and what they call “greedification” in game publishing.

First Games Announced

The CoLab is hitting the ground running with 4 upcoming titles:

  • “Campfire” – A cozy storytelling sandbox where players share emotions around a virtual campfire.

  • “DeadWire” – A fast-paced cyberpunk shooter with wild chain reaction mechanics.

  • “Counter Clash” – A strategy game where players build bases and command troops.

  • Never Mourn” – A necromancy-themed roguelite in Early Access.

A Different Kind of Publisher

According to The CoLab’s founders, too many publishers focus on profits over quality, leading to rushed, overpriced games. Meanwhile, developers face constant struggles—project cancellations, unpaid work, and even losing their own IPs.

To fight back, The CoLab is partnering with Safe in Our World, a mental health charity for the gaming industry. They’re also planning developer knowledge-sharing sessions starting later this year to help game creators learn from each other.

Looking Ahead

The CoLab has even more games planned for 2025 and 2026, and they’re determined to build long-term relationships with developers, not just pump out quick releases.

“Our goal is to make every developer who joins The CoLab an integral part of our collective,” Newnham said. The team describes their mission as a “counter revolution” against the industry’s worst practices, prioritizing quality over quantity and ensuring developers get the support they need.
