Netflix’s long-awaited live-action Assassin’s Creed series is still alive — at least according to the streaming giant’s head of gaming. In a new interview with Game File, Alain Tascan confirmed that the adaptation of Ubisoft’s hit franchise remains in active development, despite being announced nearly five years ago with little to show publicly.
The series was originally revealed in 2020, as part of a broader content deal between Netflix and Ubisoft. While Die Hard screenwriter Jeb Stuart was once attached to the project, few details have emerged since — no plot, no casting, and no timeline. That silence led many fans to assume the show had been quietly shelved.
But Tascan insists it’s still moving forward. “All of this is talk,” he said during the San Francisco interview. “At the end, we will be judged on what we’re putting out.” His comments come amid Netflix’s broader push to reassure both fans and industry watchers that it remains committed to building out its gaming and gaming-adjacent content portfolio.
Not All Assassin’s Creed Projects Survived
However, not all Assassin’s Creed projects at Netflix have survived. Tascan suggested that a mysterious Assassin’s Creed mobile game announced in 2022 is no longer in development. This follows another canceled project – an Assassin’s Creed anime series that was announced in 2017 from Adi Shankar, creator of Netflix’s popular Castlevania animated series.
A Second Chance After the 2016 Movie
This TV adaptation marks another attempt to bring Assassin’s Creed to the screen following the critically panned 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender. Netflix now hopes that an episodic format will allow for deeper character development, richer storytelling, and a more faithful representation of the series’ core themes—stealth, parkour, historical intrigue, and shadowy conspiracies.
Although it’s unclear how far along the project is as of April 2025, the fact that it remains “active” suggests Netflix and Ubisoft still see it as a key opportunity to expand the franchise’s cultural footprint beyond gaming.
