A Grand Theft Auto V modder has taken down his GTA 6 map mod after getting hit with a YouTube copyright strike from Take-Two Interactive. The mod, created by Dark Space, brought a recreated version of the GTA 6 map into GTA 5, using details from the big Rockstar Games leak in late 2022.

Even though the takedown only applied to the YouTube video, Dark Space decided to remove the mod’s download links as well to avoid any further legal trouble. In a Twitter/X post, he said, “I expected something like this could happen. I am surprised they didn’t bother emailing me. I would have taken it down if asked.”

Take-Two Interactive has a reputation for cracking down on modders, especially when it comes to protecting its intellectual property. Over the years, the company has taken legal action against several fan projects, so this move isn’t exactly surprising—especially since the mod was based on leaked content.

Most recently, the Liberty City Preservation Project, a groundbreaking GTA 5 mod that added GTA 4 as a new location, was taken down by them. Similarly, another mod, GTA Vice City: Next-Gen Edition, which recreates the classic 2002 Vice City using the RAGE engine from Grand Theft Auto IV, met a similar fate.

With GTA 6’s Fall 2025 release window locked in (despite some delay rumors), Rockstar appears to be entering protection mode. “I get why they did it,” Dark Space told IGN. “After years building this world, they don’t want some YouTuber spoiling the map’s surprises.”

GTA 6 was officially revealed on December 4, 2023, but Rockstar Games hasn’t shared any new gameplay details since. Some fans are hoping for a second trailer on April 1, though given that it’s April Fool’s Day, it’s hard to say if that will actually happen.
