In an exciting start to 2025, Markus “Notch” Persson, the creator of Minecraft, has sparked widespread interest in the gaming community with his recent announcements on X (formerly Twitter).
On January 1, he reached out to his 3.6 million followers with an interesting question: would they prefer a new game similar to Minecraft or something completely different?
Currently, Notch is working on a game called “Levers and Chests,” which combines classic roguelike elements with first-person dungeon crawling. However, after considering fan feedback, he’s now open to creating what many are calling “Minecraft 2” – though it wouldn’t actually be an official sequel.
“I thought that maybe people ACTUALLY do want me to make another game that’s super similar to the first one,” Notch shared on X, expressing his renewed enthusiasm for game development. He was quick to clarify that this wouldn’t be an official Minecraft sequel, as Microsoft owns those rights. Instead, he’s considering making “a spiritual successor” – a new game that captures the essence of Minecraft while being entirely original.
The timing of this announcement is particularly interesting, as it comes when Microsoft continues to update and expand the original Minecraft through Mojang Studios. Notch sold Mojang to Microsoft in 2014, making him a billionaire in the process.
Addressing the legality of a successor, Notch referred to this potential new project as his “Gremlins 2“. This reference to the 1990 film Gremlins 2: The New Batch — known for its bold and unexpected departure from its predecessor — indicates Notch’s willingness to take creative risks. At the same time, the comparison acknowledges the challenge of meeting the monumental expectations set by his original game, as “Gremlins 2” bombed at the box office despite being triple the budget of the original.
While the future of Notch’s next project remains uncertain, his enthusiasm for creating something meaningful shines through. Whether he develops a spiritual successor to Minecraft or completes his roguelike dungeon crawler, the gaming world will be watching closely.
