No Sequel for Metaphor: ReFantazio Yet, but Director Hopes for a Series

Metaphor: ReFantazio

Atlus’ 2024 JRPG hit, Metaphor: ReFantazio, has left a significant mark on the gaming world. Directed by Katsura Hashino and developed by Studio Zero, a team composed of former Persona series talent, the game masterfully blends turn-based combat, social simulation, and a rich political fantasy narrative. This combination earned the title widespread praise, securing accolades such as Best Art Direction and Best Narrative at The Game Awards 2024. With its success, fans are naturally curious about whether a sequel or even an entire series could be on the horizon.

In a recent double issue of Weekly Famitsu magazine, as reported by ryokutya2089, Katsura Hashino addressed the possibility of a sequel. While he confirmed there are currently no concrete plans for Metaphor: ReFantazio to become a series, he expressed a genuine desire for it to grow into one. Hashino shared his ambition for the game to stand alongside Atlus’ flagship titles, Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, as another defining JRPG series. He noted, “There are no concrete plans to make Metaphor into a series… I do hope it can become a series one day.

Hashino also revealed an intriguing idea for a potential future project. He expressed interest in exploring a JRPG set in the Sengoku period, a historically rich era in Japan marked by war and political upheaval. While drawing comparisons to Capcom’s Sengoku Basara series, Hashino humorously acknowledged the challenges such a setting might present.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding a sequel, Metaphor: ReFantazio‘s impressive performance speaks volumes about its impact. Selling over one million copies on launch day alone, it became one of Atlus’ fastest-selling titles. The game’s success has set the stage for future projects, even if a direct sequel isn’t immediately in development.

Looking ahead, Atlus seems to have an exciting roadmap for 2025. Rumors suggest updates on Persona 6 and the international release of Persona 5: The Phantom X might be in the pipeline.
