Capcom‘s beloved action platformer Mega Man 11 has reached a remarkable achievement of 2 million copies sold across consoles and PC since its 2018 release.
According to Capcom’s recently updated Platinum Titles list, the game’s journey to success has been steady and impressive. The title initially joined the prestigious Platinum list in 2019 after selling its first million copies within just one year of release. Now, Mega Man 11 surpassed the previous series record holder, Mega Man 2, which had held the top spot with 1.5 million units since its NES days.
The franchise’s overall performance has positioned it as Capcom’s fourth most successful series, with total sales reaching 42 million units. This places Mega Man behind other Capcom giants like Street Fighter (56 million), Monster Hunter (108 million), and Resident Evil (167 million).
Despite this success, the future of the franchise remains uncertain. While Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, released in May 2023, performed well with 1.42 million copies sold in just five months, fans have been waiting for a new original title since Mega Man 11’s release.
During Capcom’s 45th Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders in July 2024, the company addressed investor concerns about the series’ future. A Capcom representative acknowledged Mega Man as a “highly-valued IP” and mentioned “ongoing considerations for future game” development, though specific plans remain under wraps since.
The success of Mega Man 11 can be traced back to its innovative features like the Double Gear System, which helped both newcomers and veterans navigate the game’s challenges. Its blend of classic 2.5D style gameplay with modern mechanics proved to be a winning formula, as evidenced by its commercial performance.
The game is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms.
