Hey Zelda fans, the wait is finally over for some big news! The Legend of Zelda movie, a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony, is officially hitting theaters on March 26, 2027. This announcement comes almost two years after the project was first revealed.
After the initial excitement from the November 2023 announcement, things went pretty quiet, leaving many wondering if the movie was still happening. Good news though – it definitely is!
Nintendo chose an interesting way to break the silence, dropping this update through their brand-new Nintendo Today app. Their simple statement confirmed: “The live-action film of The Legend of Zelda will be released worldwide on March 26, 2027.”
What’s the movie actually about? Who’s starring in it? Is it a new story or based on one of the games? We don’t know yet! Nintendo is keeping those juicy details under wraps for now, but the release date confirmation is still a big step forward.

For those who might not be familiar with the franchise, The Legend of Zelda is one of gaming’s most treasured series. Since its 1986 debut on the Nintendo Entertainment System, it’s become a cornerstone of Nintendo’s lineup. The games typically follow Link on his adventures to save Princess Zelda and the kingdom of Hyrule from various threats – most often the villainous Ganon.
The numbers behind the franchise are pretty impressive too. According to recent data, Zelda games have sold more than 169 million units worldwide. The latest major release, Tears of the Kingdom, broke records in 2023 by selling a whopping 10 million copies in just its first three days – the fastest-selling title in the series’ history.
Nintendo also recently gave Princess Zelda herself the spotlight in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, released in September 2024. This innovative title has already sold 3.91 million units as of December 2024.
The Zelda adaptation is joining a growing trend of video games making their way to screens big and small. Other upcoming adaptations include titles like Helldivers 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Street Fighter, Sifu, Sleeping Dog, and Resident Evil. Meanwhile, Ghost of Tsushima is getting an anime treatment, and both God of War and The Forgotten Realms are being developed for television.
With the 2027 release date still a few years away, production is likely in the early stages. We’ll probably hear more about directors, cast, and story details at the end of the year, so stay tuned!
