Tales of Berseria, the celebrated Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment, has reached an impressive milestone. During the Western 2024 Tales of Anniversary Celebration broadcast, the game’s director Yoshimasa Tanaka announced that the game has sold over 2.5 million units worldwide.
A significant portion of these sales came from America and Europe, showcasing the game’s global popularity. Over two million units were confirmed sold as of 2021, and the additional sales further emphasize its continued success. The broadcast also featured messages from staff members involved in other Tales games, celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
Why Tales of Berseria Stands Out
Released in August 2016 in Japan and early 2017 worldwide, Tales of Berseria is part of the long-running Tales series. It serves as a prequel to Tales of Zestiria, though it is widely regarded as one of the most beloved entries in the franchise. The game’s darker, emotionally charged narrative sets it apart from its predecessors.
The story follows Velvet Crowe, a young woman whose life takes a tragic turn after a traumatic event transforms her into a daemon. Driven by a deep desire for revenge, Velvet embarks on a journey to confront Artorius, a former ally who betrayed her. The game is set in the Holy Midgand Empire, a world plagued by Daemonblight and dominated by the Abbey, a religious organization that values order over emotions. Along the way, Velvet is joined by a diverse group of companions, including the enigmatic Malak, Laphicet, and the determined exorcist, Eleanor.

Tales of Berseria features the Linear Motion Battle System (LMBS), allowing players to create dynamic combos using the “Soul Gauge” system. Players explore vast environments, complete story-driven quests, and engage in challenging side missions. The rich character development and compelling backstories of party members like Rokurou add depth to the gameplay experience.
