The co-op horror game Phasmophobia has reached an incredible milestone, reaching almost 22 million copies sold worldwide.
Available on Steam, PlayStation 5 (including PS VR2), and Xbox Series X|S, this success places Phasmophobia among the top indie titles, surpassing notable games like It Takes Two and the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.
From Solo Project to Global Phenomenon
Originally developed as a solo project by Daniel Knight, Phasmophobia launched Early Access on Steam in September 2020. It quickly captured the attention of players with its unique co-op ghost-hunting gameplay and immersive horror experience.
On October 31, 2024, Kinetic Games announced that the game had reached 20 million sales, just two days after its console debut.
Since then, the momentum has only grown. Over the next 35 days, the game added more than 1 million copies to its total sales, thanks to the expanded audience from consoles and the popular Crimson Eye Halloween event. This brings the total to nearly 22 million copies sold.
Daniel Knight, Managing Director and Lead Developer at Kinetic Games expressed his gratitude in a press release:
“This incredible achievement is only possible thanks to our wonderful, supportive and engaged community. The entire team here at Kinetic Games could not be happier, reaching this milestone is the best Christmas present we could have wished for.”
Key to Success
The game’s ongoing success can be attributed to several factors. Kinetic Games has consistently released major updates, refining gameplay mechanics, new difficulty levels, and adding new content based on player feedback.
Additionally, the game owes much of its popularity to streamers and content creators who have showcased its spine-chilling gameplay to millions of viewers, driving even more interest. Back in 2020, it became the most-watched game on Twitch, drawing over 247,000 viewers and beating out major releases like Star Wars: Squadrons and Crash Bandicoot 4 at that time.
This early attention led Phasmophobia to win the “Best Debut Game” award at The Game Awards 2020.
