The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) has released the results of its 2023 Developer Satisfaction Survey, shedding light on ongoing challenges and trends in the global gaming industry. Conducted between May and October 2023, the survey gathered responses from 777 developers, capturing their insights on employment conditions, workplace satisfaction, and industry-wide concerns.

Job Layoffs and Employment Concerns

One of the most significant findings was the alarming rate of job losses. In 2023 alone, around 10,500 game developers faced layoffs globally. The survey revealed that 4.8% of respondents were unemployed at the time of response, highlighting the instability within the industry. Companies are cutting jobs for various reasons, including rising operational costs and shifting market demands. Unfortunately, the trend seems to be continuing into 2024 with additional waves of layoffs.

Workplace Satisfaction and Crunch Culture

Despite the job uncertainties, 67% of developers reported positive relationships between employees and management, describing them as good or excellent. However, 28% of respondents admitted to experiencing crunch time, while an additional 25% reported working extended hours. Although this marks a slight improvement from previous years, it remains a significant concern. Many developers noted that crunch time feels like an unavoidable part of their roles, regardless of their employment type.

Concerns About Credit Policies

Another troubling insight is the lack of standardized crediting policies in studios. According to the survey, 48% of companies do not have a proper credits policy in place. Only 41% of respondents believed they would be credited for their work if they left before a project’s completion. Recent controversies, such as missing credits in Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones, highlight the ongoing issue of recognition in the gaming industry.

A Path Forward

The IGDA survey emphasizes the need for improved job security, fair crediting practices, and healthier workplace cultures. While these concerns are not new, the survey serves as an important reminder for industry leaders to address these issues head-on. With collective effort and continued focus, the gaming industry can evolve into a more stable and equitable space for all developers.
