Hogwarts Legacy 2: WB Games’ Top Priority, But When Can We Expect It?

Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels recently confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is the top priority for WB Games, but it may take a few years before the game is released.

Wiedenfels spoke about this at the Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference hosted by Bank of America, emphasizing the importance of the sequel to the company’s gaming division.

In the exact statement, noted by Variety, Wiedenfels said,

“Obviously, a successor to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road.”

It’s no surprise that WB Games is focusing on Hogwarts Legacy 2, as the original game was a huge success. It was the best-selling game last year, with over 22 million copies sold, outperforming popular titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Diablo IV, Starfield, and Resident Evil 4. In fact, it broke Call of Duty’s 15-year streak as the best-selling game in the U.S.

When Can We Expect Hogwarts Legacy 2 to Be Released?

However, the release date for Hogwarts Legacy 2 remains unclear. While Wiedenfels mentioned it would be a few years away, this could mean we won’t see the game anywhere until 2026/2027. Given the scale of the first game, it seems unlikely that Avalanche Studios could release a full sequel before then.

Another speculation is that the sequel’s release could align with the next generation of consoles, as there are rumors that Microsoft and Playstations are both planning to release the successor of its next-gen console in upcoming years.

There are also hints that Hogwarts Legacy 2 might include live service features. Earlier this year, JB Perrette, CEO of Global Streaming and Games at Warner Bros. Discovery, suggested that the sequel could introduce elements that extend the game’s lifespan post-launch. If true, this would allow the game, which will be powered by Unreal Engine 5, to stay relevant for a long time after its release.

Director’s Cut of Hogwarts Legacy

In addition to working on the sequel, WB Games is reportedly developing a Director’s Cut of the first Hogwarts Legacy, with the help of Rocksteady.

This updated version might come as a paid expansion for current players or be sold as a complete package for new customers, similar to Star Wars Battlefront 2’s Celebration Edition.

The Director’s Cut could potentially include content that was initially planned for the original game but didn’t make the final release, such as new spells, missions, or areas like the Chamber of Secrets.

Earlier this summer, the game received a free update that introduced a long-requested Photo Mode.

While there’s no news about any upcoming story expansions, fans of the Wizarding World won’t be left empty-handed. WB Games has just released Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a free game based on the magical sport, available to PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store).
