Rockstar Games is reportedly planning to bring user-generated content (UGC) to Grand Theft Auto 6, allowing players to create their own in-game experiences.
According to reports by Digiday, Rockstar has been in discussions with top Fortnite, Roblox, and GTA content creators about implementing tools for modifying the game’s environment and assets.
This could allow users to integrate their own intellectual property and even attract brand sponsorships within GTA 6‘s virtual world.
A Shift Towards User-Generated Content
The move aligns with a broader industry shift toward user-generated content, which has seen immense success in games like Roblox and Fortnite. Platforms that encourage player creativity have not only expanded engagement but also created new revenue opportunities for developers and creators alike.
For example, Fortnite’s Unreal Editor enables users to design unique maps and assets, which has driven massive content creation. In 2024 alone, Epic Games paid out $352 million to top creators, marking an 11% increase from the previous year. Players spent 5.23 billion hours engaging with user-generated content, making up 36.5% of total gameplay time. Such figures highlight the growing potential of custom-built experiences in gaming.
Meanwhile, Roblox has also positioned itself as a leader in user-generated content. The company’s CEO, David Baszucki, emphasized in a latest earnings call that Roblox is committed to fostering innovation and community-driven experiences. He stated that the platform is focused on expanding its virtual economy, improving performance, and enhancing AI-powered content discovery. These efforts are aimed at making Roblox a dominant force in the gaming content market, which they hope to capture a “10% share” of in the coming years.
The Growing Creator Economy in Gaming
The gaming creator economy is on a rapid rise. According to Market.Us, the market is expected to grow 10X from USD 28.6 billion in 2024 to an estimated USD 230.4 billion by 2034, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23.2%. This surge is fueled by the increasing influence of content creators, streamers, and user-generated gaming experiences.
With GTA 6 reportedly adopting user-generated content, Rockstar Games appears to be positioning itself within this booming market. The addition of player-created experiences could open up new revenue opportunities and extend the game’s lifespan, similar to how modding communities have kept GTA 5 thriving for over a decade.
How Rockstar Could Monetize Custom Content
Rockstar’s previous acquisition of CFX.re—the developers behind FiveM, a popular GTA 5 role-playing mod—suggests the company is already exploring ways to integrate custom content into GTA 6. RP servers in GTA 5 have shown that players are willing to pay subscription fees for access to unique experiences, with some servers charging between $25 to $100 per month.
If Rockstar implements similar monetization strategies, GTA 6 could become one of the most lucrative UGC platforms in the gaming industry. Unlike Roblox and Fortnite, which focus on virtual item sales and revenue-sharing programs, Rockstar could introduce a hybrid system that includes both direct player transactions and platform-wide monetization features.
With GTA 6’s reported $2 billion production cost, there are rumors (more of “the hope”) that GTA 6 might break the price barrier ($70) as they did before. However, Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, remains committed to the current system stating they are “delivering more value than what [they] charge.” By integrating UGC with proper monetization, Rockstar could create additional revenue streams without increasing the base game price.
With discussions still in the early stages, details remain limited, but industry insiders are optimistic. As of now, the publisher maintains its commitment to the Fall 2025 release window debunking the speculation about possible delays.
