Big news for GTA fans! Grand Theft Auto 5 is set to drop on both Xbox and PC Game Pass later this month, according to an email Rockstar Games sent to GTA community pages. While the game has popped up on Xbox Game Pass before, this marks the first time it’ll be available on PC Game Pass.
The news first surfaced through @videotechuk_, a well-known X (formerly Twitter) account that covers Rockstar Games-related content. It also lines up with earlier info from Rockstar insider Tez2, who hinted last year that the company was “prepping GTA 5 for PC Game Pass for future availability.”
Another exciting update? GTA 5 is also headed to Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud) for the first time. This means Game Pass subscribers can stream the game without downloading it.
Rockstar has already started informing content creators about this move, so an official announcement should be dropping soon. If all goes as expected, it won’t be long before players can explore Los Santos through their subscription.
GTA 5’s Record-Breaking Success Continues
Even after more than a decade, GTA 5 remains a powerhouse. Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, reported in December 2024 that the game had sold a jaw-dropping 210 million copies across all platforms. That’s some serious staying power!
The timing of this Game Pass addition is interesting, too. Rockstar is currently hard at work on GTA 6, which is set to launch in fall 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC release hasn’t been confirmed yet, but if history is any indication, it’ll likely arrive later.
GTA 5’s History with Game Pass
If you’ve been following GTA 5’s relationship with Game Pass, you’ll know this isn’t its first rodeo—at least on Xbox. The game has previously been available during these periods:
-
January – May 2020
-
April – August 2021
-
July 2023 – January 2024
During these times, Xbox Game Pass subscribers could play on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, with cloud streaming also included.
But PC Game Pass? That’s new. Rockstar actually laid the foundation for this move back in March 2025 when it updated the Rockstar Games Launcher to work with the Xbox PC app.
How Much Does Microsoft Pay for GTA 5 on Game Pass?
Getting GTA 5 on Game Pass isn’t cheap. According to leaked documents from 2023, Microsoft pays somewhere between $12-15 million per month to secure major titles like this. It’s a big investment, but considering how popular the game is, it makes sense.
What’s Next?
If everything checks out, GTA 5 should be hitting both Xbox and PC Game Pass sometime this month. Based on past trends, it’ll likely stay in the catalog for around 3-6 months. Expect an official confirmation soon, as Microsoft usually announces new Game Pass titles early or mid-month. The April Wave 1 of the game pass has already been announced. Now, we wait for Wave 2.
For Game Pass subscribers who haven’t played GTA 5 yet—or those who just want to revisit the chaos of Los Santos—this is a solid win. Keep an eye out for Rockstar’s official announcement!
