A new mod that recreates Grand Theft Auto: Vice City within GTA 4’s engine has been released by Revolution Team, despite earlier takedown notices from Take-Two Interactive. This modification, titled “GTA: Vice City Next-Gen Edition,” brings the complete Vice City experience into GTA 4’s framework.
According to IGN’s report, the mod includes reconstructed missions, cutscenes, and side activities from the original Vice City game. While Take-Two Interactive previously removed Revolution Team’s YouTube channel and promotional videos, the team proceeded with the mod’s release as scheduled.
The development team made a significant change to their initial plans. Originally, the mod was meant to require users to own GTA 4, as a gesture of respect toward the original publisher, but this requirement was removed in the final version to improve accessibility and performance.
In their release statement, Revolution Team acknowledged that they’re unsure how long the mod will remain available, given Take-Two’s history of removing fan modifications. “The most important thing now is that we released the project on the promised date [January 25],” stated Revolution Team, adding that they’re “not opposed to reuploads” if Take-Two takes action against the current release.
GTA Vice City Next Gen Edition is pretty crazy.
Seeing GTAVC run in real-time on top of the GTA 4 engine with all its cars, NPCs and even missions included is what The Definitive Edition should have been. Modders truly are incredible.pic.twitter.com/U2QC0Ncw8R

In a similar case, Rockstar shut down The Liberty City Preservation Project recently, a highly ambitious Grand Theft Auto 5 mod that brought GTA 4’s iconic New York-inspired setting to the game. The project has been in development since 2018.
Rockstar has a history of suppressing fan projects. Notably, the company previously ceased development on fan-made remakes of GTA 3 and Vice City ahead of the troubled launch of GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition. This pattern has fueled speculation that Rockstar is protecting its own plans for future remasters, possibly including the rumored GTA 4 remaster, which some believe could still be in development.
Nevertheless, this fan project emerges as Rockstar Games continues development on Grand Theft Auto 6, which is scheduled for release in fall 2025. The official sequel will mark the franchise’s first new entry since Grand Theft Auto 5’s release in 2013.
