42nd Golden Joystick Awards: Nominations Announced for 2024

The Golden Joystick Awards, also known as the People’s Gaming Awards, has announced the nominations for its 42nd edition. Established in 1983, the Golden Joystick Awards is the longest-running video game award ceremony, second only to the Arcade Awards, which began in 1981.

Initially, voting was limited to the British public, but the awards have since evolved into a global event, with votes now cast online through GamesRadar+.

While the awards initially focused on computer games, they have since expanded to include console and mobile games as well. This year’s ceremony will feature 19 categories, including the much-anticipated Game of the Year awards for PC, console, and Ultimate.

New categories have been added to reflect the diversity of game releases in 2024, such as ‘Best Soundtrack,’ ‘Best Audio Design,’ and ‘Best Indie Game – Self Published.’

Key Dates and Voting

Voting is now open for most categories, including PC Game of the Year and Console Game of the Year. Fans have until Friday, November 1, to cast their votes. The Ultimate Game of the Year category, however, will have its shortlist revealed on November 4, with voting opening on the same day.

Winners in additional categories, such as the ‘Breakthrough Award’ and ‘Critics Choice Award,’ will be selected by a panel of journalists from gaming publications including GamesRadar, PC Gamer, and Edge magazine.

The 42nd Golden Joystick Awards ceremony will take place on November 21 in central London, with a live stream for audiences worldwide.

Last year, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Larian Studios made history by winning seven awards.

Reflecting on this year’s nominees, content director Daniel Dawkins said, “2024 has been a challenging year for the games industry in many ways, but the variety and diversity of releases over the past 12 months have made this one of the most exciting and difficult Golden Joystick Awards nominations we’ve ever compiled.”
