GOG has unveiled a significant update to its game preservation program, furthering its commitment to ensuring classic titles remain accessible and playable on modern systems. This initiative aims to safeguard older games, even after developers and publishers stop supporting or selling them.
In a noteworthy expansion of the program, GOG has announced that any game included in its preservation collection will continue to receive technical support, even if the game is delisted by publishers. This ensures that players who own these titles can keep enjoying them, regardless of advancements in technology or changes in the gaming industry.
The latest development comes in response to Blizzard’s decision to remove two of its iconic games—Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft II—from sale. Both titles are part of GOG’s Preservation Program and will remain fully supported on the platform, even after they are no longer available for purchase.
In a blog post announcing the delisting, GOG detailed its ongoing commitment to the program. “Once a game joins the Program, we pledge to maintain its compatibility even if it gets delisted from the store,” the statement reads. “This means that owners of those titles can still expect a seamless experience and tech support for those titles. This also considers potential changes in Windows OS that may impact games’ playability.”
GOG also expressed gratitude to Blizzard for collaborating on the preservation of these titles. While the delisting is regrettable, the platform reassured users that those who already own the games will continue to have access to versions optimized for modern systems.
Players interested in purchasing Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft II still have until December 13 to acquire them on GOG. A bundle promotion is currently available, and using the code “MakeWarcraftLiveForever” grants a discount. After this date, the games will be removed from the store.
Blizzard has not commented on the removal of these titles, but it is widely speculated that the decision aligns with the release of the Warcraft 1 & 2 Remastered editions. These remastered versions are included in the Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest alongside Warcraft III: Reforged and can be purchased separately on Battle.net. However, it appears unlikely that these updated editions will be made available on GOG.
