GOG, a digital game distribution platform known for its commitment to classic games, has partnered with the European Federation of Game Archives, Museums, and Preservation Projects (EFGAMP).
EFGAMP is the largest European federation dedicated to safeguarding video games as cultural heritage since 2012. The federation represents more than 20 heritage institutions and other organizations such as The Video Game Museum in Rome, MO5.COM in France, Computerspielemuseum in Berlin, The Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision, and the Embracer Games Archive. GOG stated that its membership represents a significant milestone in connecting the private sector with cultural organizations across Europe.
By joining EFGAMP, GOG aims to strengthen its position as a global leader in game preservation. The company also hopes to amplify its advocacy for protecting classic games for future generations.
“GOG was created with video game preservation in mind,” said Maciej Gołębiewski, managing director at GOG. “Preserving classic games and ensuring they remain accessible to players has always been a core part of our mission. Over the past decade, we’ve built expertise in this area through initiatives like the GOG Preservation Program. This program ensures compatibility for over 100 games and provides numerous enhancements, making these titles enjoyable for modern audiences. The positive reception from players, partners, and the gaming industry inspires us to continue this vital work.”
Andreas Lange, COO of EFGAMP, praised GOG’s addition to the federation, stating, “GOG brings a unique perspective as a leader in digital game distribution. Their efforts to make classic games accessible to modern players perfectly align with the cultural heritage preservation efforts of our members. GOG’s digital expertise adds immense value to our collective mission of safeguarding video games as a part of cultural history.”
This partnership highlights the growing recognition of video games as a significant cultural medium. During a time when publishers often shut down years of developers’ work without providing any physical or alternative options (recent The Crew case), GOG and EFGAMP have emerged as lifesavers.
The GOG Preservation Program has already demonstrated its effectiveness, making hundreds of classic games compatible with modern systems while preserving their original charm. Now, as part of EFGAMP, GOG hopes to contribute even more meaningfully to the preservation and celebration of video game history.
