Sucker Punch Productions’ critically acclaimed action-adventure game, Ghost of Tsushima, has sold over 13 million copies worldwide across PS4, PS5, and PC.
The figure was revealed by Sucker Punch’s creative directors, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, during an interview with The New York Times, where they sat down to discuss the upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei.
Initially released on PS4 in July 2020, the game has since expanded its reach through:
- A Director’s Cut edition for PS5 in July 2021, with enhanced graphics, new content, and a DLC expansion.
- A PC version launched in May 2024, receiving a “Very Positive” reviews on Steam.
- A multiplayer mode, legends mode.
The game’s PC launch was particularly significant, as it became Sony’s biggest Steam debut for a single-player title topping the US best-seller charts in May 2024.
Back in July 2022, Sucker Punch reported via X (formerly Twitter) that Ghost of Tsushima had sold 9.73 million copies by mid-2022. This means that the PC release, combined with additional sales from the PS4 and PS5 versions, has pushed the game over the 13 million mark.
The Sequel “Ghost of Yotei” Announced
Revealed during PlayStation’s State of Play event, the sequel introduces a new female protagonist, Atsu, portrayed by actress Erika Ishii (known for Apex Legends, and Destiny 2).
The game takes place in the breathtaking region of Ezo, now known as Hokkaido (Japan’s Northern part), and showcases the beautiful yet dangerous surroundings of Mount Yotei.
Creative director Nate Fox shared his vision for the new setting describing the thrilling and treacherous landscapes players will explore. “Being in this incredibly beautiful park with jagged cliffs and water, yet all the time being aware there were dangerous bears, was electrifying,” Fox explained.
While the exact release date for Ghost of Yotei has not yet been confirmed, it is slated for launch in 2025. The announcement trailer has already garnered over 5 million views on YouTube, signaling strong anticipation from fans.
Furthermore, as per the analysis of TrueTrophies, news of the sequel’s announcement has led to a 53% spike in active players for Ghost of Tsushima, both on the PS4 version and the PS5 Director’s Cut.
Movie in the Works
Alongside the game, a cinematic adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima is already in development, directed by Chad Stahelski, known for his work on the John Wick films.
Sony saw success with Uncharted, The Last of Us TV series which renewed interest in the game franchise. As Hermen Hulst, the head of Sony’s studio business, explained, this cross-media approach helps bring audiences back to the games. “When a television series or movie comes out, people are inspired to play again or encourage their friends to start playing,” Hulst said. He also tried it with his “Baby” Concord but failed miserably. For now, Concord is at least getting its series episode in Amazon’s series, Secret Level.
While details on the film are still under wraps, this project could further expand the Ghost of Tsushima universe and attract an even wider audience.
