Sony’s popular game, Ghost of Tsushima, is set to be adapted into an anime, scheduled for release on Crunchyroll in 2027.
The anime will focus on the game’s multiplayer mode, Legends, which draws inspiration from Japanese folklore and mythology, offering a unique and engaging storyline.
The announcement was made by Crunchyroll, a streaming platform owned by Sony, in collaboration with Sony Music, PlayStation Productions, and Aniplex.
Aniplex, known for producing acclaimed series like Demon Slayer and Sword Art Online, will co-produce the anime. Animation will be handled by Kamikaze Douga, the studio behind Star Wars: Visions on Disney+.
Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll, expressed excitement about the project, calling it a “testament to the creative synergy within the Sony family.” He highlighted the collaboration between PlayStation Studios, Sucker Punch Productions, Sony Music, and Crunchyroll. “The Ghost of Tsushima anime will offer fans an exciting new way to experience the game, presented in a bold and groundbreaking anime style,” Purini stated.
The Legends mode, central to the anime, allows players to select one of four character classes, each embodying different aspects of the main character Jin’s powers. Players then face off against enemies inspired by Japanese mythology. This mode’s imaginative world makes it an ideal choice for an anime adaptation.
The anime project is distinct from the previously announced film adaptation, which is being directed by Chad Stahelski of John Wick: Chapter 4 fame. Additionally, Hiroyuki Sanada, known for his role in Shogun, is reportedly in talks for a part in the movie.
This announcement comes amid Sony’s growing interest in anime and gaming collaborations. In a strategic move, Sony became the largest shareholder of Kadokawa, the parent company of FromSoftware, further strengthening its position in the anime industry. Fans can anticipate more anime projects in the future as part of this partnership.
Meanwhile, Sony and Sucker Punch are preparing to release the next game in the series, Ghost of Yotei, later this year. Set a few centuries after the original, it will explore the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, offering players a fresh narrative and setting.
Two movie adaptations of Sony’s latest releases, Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn, were also announced recently at CES 2025.
