A Fortnite movie rumor took off on social media this weekend—but it didn’t last long. Just hours after speculation started spreading, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney quickly shut it down with a blunt response on Twitter (X): “False.”

Rumor Fueled by Minecraft’s Box Office Boom

The renewed buzz around a Fortnite movie began in the wake of A Minecraft Movie’s record-breaking debut, which pulled in $58 million on opening day. Industry insider DanielRPK tweeted (now deleted), “You just know Fortnite is next. There was already talk of a Fortnite movie, but some studios passed on it. That’s obviously gonna change now.”

The post lit up social media, suggesting that previously shelved movie plans might be back on the table. But Tim Sweeney’s swift denial brought those hopes crashing down.

Even after the rumor was shot down, DanielRPK followed up, directly asking Sweeney whether Sony had passed on a Fortnite film in the past. As of now, Sweeney hasn’t responded to that question.

Not the First Time Fortnite’s Been Linked to Hollywood

This isn’t Fortnite’s first flirtation with the big screen. Rumors of a movie adaptation have been floating around since at least 2021, when Epic was reportedly exploringscripted entertainment division. That speculation ramped up after the company hired former Lucasfilm execs, including Jason McGatlin as President of Special Projects.

Several notable directors have publicly expressed interest in adapting Fortnite. At San Diego Comic-Con 2023Fast X director Louis Leterrier called Fortnite a dream project, praising its characters and world-building. Zack Snyder also revealed his interest, citing how much his son plays the game.

Even Donald Mustard, Epic’s former Chief Creative Officer, weighed in. In a 2023 interview with Collider, he said he knew exactly how he’d approach a Fortnite film—but wasn’t actively working on it. A year later, he told GamesRadar that adapting Fortnite’s ever-changing, interactive world into a traditional film would be a serious challenge.

Why It’s a Tough Adaptation

While fans love the idea of a Fortnite movie, actually making one would come with major obstacles. The game’s fluid, constantly evolving storyline doesn’t lend itself easily to a fixed narrative. Plus, Fortnite’s endless crossovers with brands like MarvelStar Wars, and more would create a legal minefield for any adaptation.

Some fans picture a stylized animated film that reflects Fortnite’s vibrant look. Others dream of a live-action version featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who already voices the in-game character The Foundation.

No Movie Plans… For Now

Despite all the chatter, Epic seems focused on Fortnite’s in-game evolution. The studio continues to push Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), launch new Festival seasons, and drop fresh battle royale content every few weeks.

Still, given the massive financial success of video game adaptations like The Super Mario Bros. MovieSonic 3, Fallout, and The Last of Us, the idea of a Fortnite film won’t be going away anytime soon.

For now, though? No movie. No deal. Just Fortnite doing Fortnite things.
