Flash and Constantine: DC Games That Never Saw the Light of Day

In an interesting revelation from Bloomberg’s extensive report on Warner Bros. Games, WB Games Montréal had two intriguing DC projects that never made it to production – a Flash game and a Constantine title.

According to the report, after the studio’s work on Gotham Knights in 2022, the team initially pitched a game centered around supernatural detective John Constantine. The character, famously portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 film, seemed to catch the interest of WB Games’ leadership, including Vice President of Production Ben Bell. However, despite initial enthusiasm, the project remained in limbo as executives hesitated to provide necessary budget and timeline approvals.

The situation then took an unexpected turn when Bell suggested the studio should instead focus on a more recognizable character like The Flash or The Joker. This led to the development of a game starring The Flash. However, fate had other plans. The project was ultimately scrapped following the poor box-office performance of the 2023 Flash movie starring Ezra Miller.

These cancellations weren’t isolated incidents. The report further reveals that WB Games Montréal has faced numerous challenges in getting new projects off the ground. After Gotham Knights’ mixed release, WB Montreal wanted to create an improved version (described as a “1.5″ version) that would fix the original game’s flaws. However, management rejected this idea and instead assigned the team to help with other projects. This resulted in the resignation of most of its leadership over the past two years, with many citing frustration not only with the lack of new game approvals but also with corporate management decisions.

Now, the Montreal studio is helping out with other projects, such as Monolith Productions’s Wonder Woman game, while working on a pitch for a new game based on Game of Thrones.
