Fable Developer Eidos-Montreal Cuts 75 Jobs as Project Ends

Eidos-Montreal, the Canadian video game developer known for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has announced it’s laying off up to 75 employees. The studio shared this news on social media Monday, explaining these cuts are happening because “one of our mandates is coming to an end.”

The company made it clear that these layoffs aren’t about performance issues. “It is not a reflection of their dedication or skills, but unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to entirely reallocate them to our other ongoing projects and services,” the studio noted in their announcement.

Eidos-Montreal is working to support these folks as they look for new jobs, acknowledging the talent they’ll bring to their next positions. Even with these cuts, the studio says they’re still “committed to deliver” on all their current projects.

This isn’t their first round of downsizing. In early 2024, Eidos-Montreal cut 97 positions, which means they’ve now laid off over 150 people in total in a few months. These reductions are part of a broader trend of job cuts throughout the gaming industry lately.

Right now, Eidos-Montreal is helping Playground Games develop the new Fable game, which was recently pushed back to 2026.

Since its founding in 2007, the studio has built quite a reputation for creating story-rich games, working on major franchises like Deus Ex, Thief, and Tomb Raider.

The studio has changed hands a few times over the years. It started under SCi Entertainment as part of Eidos Interactive, became Square Enix Europe property in 2009, and was picked up by Embracer Group alongside Crystal Dynamics in a $300 million deal in 2022.

When Embracer took over, fans got excited about possible revivals of beloved series like Deus Ex and Thief. There were even reports in late 2022 suggesting a new Deus Ex game was in early development. However, more recent information indicates Embracer canceled an unannounced Deus Ex project during restructuring.

This ownership change has coincided with rocky times at Eidos-Montreal. Just days before this announcement, Embracer also cut 17 positions at Crystal Dynamics.
