Rumor: Elden Ring Studio FromSoftware Secretly Working on New Game ‘CL’

FromSoftware, the renowned game developer behind hits like Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Armored Core, is reportedly working on a new, mysterious project under the codename “CL.”

According to industry insider Kurakasis, who has previously shared reliable information, this project has been in development since before the release of the Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree.

The codename suggests that “CL” is likely a brand-new game rather than a continuation of any existing series, sparking widespread speculation among fans.

Kurakasis, active on social media platform X, explained that Elden Ring was internally referred to as “GR” (standing for Great Rune), indicating a distinct codename from “CL.” This has led to the strong belief that “CL” is not linked to Elden Ring or any known FromSoftware title.

On October 29, 2024, Kurakasis shared,

“Something that FromSoftware was working on before the release of the Elden Ring DLC had the codename CL. I haven’t found any info suggesting that the Elden Ring DLC has a different codename than the base game (GR – Great Rune), so it’s possible that CL is a new FromSoftware game.”

As fans eagerly discussed the possibilities, some speculated that “CL” might be DLC for Armored Core 6, a highly anticipated game released in 2023. However, Kurakasis quickly clarified that Armored Core 6’s codename was actually “FNR.”

On October 30, 2024,  Kurakasis shared some codenames used for previous FromSoftware titles to further clarify the situation:

“Codenames for some previous FromSoftware games:

Dark Souls II – FRPG2,

Dark Souls III – FDP,

Dark Souls Remastered – FHD,

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – NTCG,

Elden Ring – GR (Great Rune),

Armored Core VI – FNR”

Each codename aligns with specific projects, giving fans even more confidence that “CL” stands for something entirely unique.

In October 2023, FromSoftware began hiring for multiple upcoming projects, hinting at its intent to expand and innovate. Earlier in 2024, the studio acknowledged the possibility of an Elden Ring sequel but has not confirmed whether it is actively in development.

Meanwhile, rumors suggest that director Hidetaka Miyazaki may be considering stepping back from a directorial role to enable new talent to emerge within the studio.

With its recent success from both Elden Ring and Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, FromSoftware is at the peak of its influence in the gaming industry. Fans are eagerly awaiting official news on the “CL” project, anticipating another groundbreaking title.
