Fantasy author George R. R. Martin has revealed that preliminary discussions are taking place regarding a potential movie adaptation of Elden Ring. Speaking with IGN at Fan Fest 2025, Martin’s comments mark the strongest indication yet that the critically acclaimed video game could make its way to the big screen.

The acclaimed creator shared limited but intriguing details about the project, stating, “Well, I can’t say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring.” His remarks align with previous statements from key figures involved in the game’s development.

FromSoftware, the game’s developer, has already shown openness to the idea. According to FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki, the studio would welcome an adaptation under the right circumstances. “I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example,” Miyazaki told The Guardian. However, he emphasized the importance of finding “a very strong partner” to ensure a faithful and high-quality adaptation.

Martin’s potential involvement in the movie project remains uncertain, primarily due to his existing commitments. The author indicated that his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter might restrict his participation in the film adaptation.

The original game, which became one of 2022’s bestselling titles, benefited significantly from Martin’s contribution to its world-building. His work focused on creating the foundation of the Elden Ring universe, including its history, mythology, and magical systems. The game’s credits acknowledge this crucial collaboration, noting that “the world was created jointly by Martin and FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Martin also shed light on the depth of the game’s universe, comparing it to Tolkien’s extensive world-building. He revealed that his work on Elden Ring involved creating detailed histories spanning thousands of years before the game’s events, including the development of the world’s magic systems and fundamental runes. This unused content could potentially serve as a resource for the film adaptation. “When you’re world-building, there’s always more that you actually see on the screen, I mean, you look at Tolkien and there are hundreds of pages of past history before you get to even the era of the Hobbit.”

The success of previous gaming adaptations and Martin’s experience with HBO’s Game of Thrones series suggests that an Elden Ring movie could find significant audience interest if it moves forward.
