Dynasty Warriors: Origins has reached a major milestone, selling one million copies within its first month of release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms. The latest entry in the long-running hack-and-slash series launched on January 17, 2025, marking a triumphant return after a seven-year hiatus.

According to Tech Raptor, the game’s success extends beyond sales figures, with its demo being downloaded over two million times. Publisher Koei Tecmo celebrated this achievement by releasing special artwork featuring the game’s amnesiac protagonist alongside the character Yuanhua.

The game has particularly excelled on PC, as SteamDB data reveals it achieved a peak of 69,483 concurrent players on launch day, making it Koei Tecmo’s second-most-played game on the platform. Player reception has been notably positive, with the game maintaining an impressive 93% approval rating from nearly 15,000 Steam reviews.

Critics have also embraced the title, with Metacritic scores ranging from 79 on Xbox Series X to 84 on PC, surpassing the ratings of beloved classics like Dynasty Warriors 3 and 4. This success adds to the franchise’s impressive legacy of over 21 million copies sold across its various entries.

Developed by Omega Force, DW Origins introduces several innovations while maintaining the series’ signature style. New features include a Parry system, “Battle Arts” that players can unlock through brave combat, and tactical squad management with bodyguards. New Game+ Mode allows new players to carry over their character’s rank, stats, unlocked abilities, weapons, accessories, items, horses, money, skill tree progress, and more.

The story takes a fresh approach by covering only the first half of the Chinese classic “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” and introducing an original protagonist.

The game’s success comes at an interesting time for Koei Tecmo. The company recently surprised fans by releasing a new spin-off, Warriors: Abyss, on February 13, 2025. It blends the traditional musou gameplay with real-time combat elements inspired by games like Hades and Vampire Survivors. Additionally, the company is preparing for a leadership transition, with Hisashi Koinuma taking over as president and CEO on April 1.

The strong commercial performance of Origins suggests a bright future for the franchise, potentially paving the way for additional content and collaborations. Currently, the game is available for $69.99, with a digital deluxe edition priced at $89.99, and continues to offer a free demo for players interested in experiencing this revival of the famous Musou genre.
