Dino Patti, co-founder of Jumpship, has reacquired the studio after Thunderful Games’ recent layoffs and restructuring.
The journey of Jumpship began in 2017 when Patti, known for his work on acclaimed titles like Limbo and Inside, partnered with film animator Chris Olsen to establish the studio. Their collaboration resulted in the sci-fi adventure game Somerville, which launched in 2022. That same year, Thunderful Games acquired Jumpship, with Olsen leaving the company, and Patti took on a role as a strategic advisor.
However, due to Thunderful’s financial difficulties and layoffs in November affecting over 100 employees, Patti has now regained ownership of Jumpship. In a statement, he expressed his desire to steer the studio in a new direction, emphasizing the need for a fresh approach to investment and publishing in the gaming industry.
“I can’t lift the veil just yet, but I truly believe the current investment and publishing landscape has gone stale,” Patti stated. “It needs a complete overhaul to better serve talented game developers and, most importantly, the players.”
Patti also highlighted his long-term vision for Jumpship, reaffirming its focus on emotion-driven storytelling and innovation. “Jumpship has always been about pushing the boundaries of emotions, storytelling, and creativity in gaming. This is more than just a business decision; it’s about reigniting the passion and vision that first sparked Jumpship – while taking it further than ever before.”
Despite regaining ownership, Patti acknowledged the challenges ahead, as the company is currently without employees. He remains optimistic, however, stating that this transition presents an opportunity to redefine how game studios operate and how talent is nurtured within the industry.
While details on Jumpship’s next steps remain under wraps, he assured fans that more updates will be shared soon.
In addition to this move, he has invested in Sad Owl Studios, the team behind the indie game Viewfinder.
