Exciting news for Destiny fans! Chinese publisher NetEase Games, in collaboration with Bungie, has announced a free-to-play mobile RPG first-person shooter – Destiny: Rising.
Set in an alternate timeline within the Destiny universe, the game aims to bring the epic sci-fi world of Destiny to handheld devices.
Key features include:
- Both first-person and third-person gameplay modes
- Support for PlayStation, Xbox, and mobile-specific controllers
- A diverse roster of playable hero characters
- A shared world experience
- Various game modes, including familiar ones from the Destiny franchise
When Can Players Get Their Hands on Destiny: Rising?
A closed alpha test is scheduled to begin on November 1. Eager players can apply now through the official website to potentially participate in this early testing phase.
The Story Behind Destiny: Rising
Destiny: Rising explores an alternate timeline in the Destiny universe, set in the post-Dark Age era. The game narrative focuses on:
- The rise of Lightbearers, resurrected by mysterious Ghosts
- Humanity’s struggle against alien forces
- The early days of The City’s formation
“Destiny: Rising delves into an unseen era where burgeoning hope blooms once again after a terrifying collapse of civilization and the dangers of the resulting Dark Age. With the help of legendary Iron Lords, humanity has broken free the shackles of tyranny and began to rally together against the alien forces intent on its extinction. Amidst the chaos of this early age for The City, a new generation of Lightbearers, resurrected by mysterious entities known as Ghosts, set out to restore humanity’s prominence and secure its future.”

How Does This Collaboration Impact the Destiny Franchise?
This partnership between NetEase Games and Bungie represents a significant expansion of the Destiny universe. In late January 2019, following Bungie’s separation from Activision and acquisition of the Destiny rights, NetEase invested over $100 million in the Destiny studio. This investment appears to have culminated in the expansion.
Ethan Wang, senior vice president at NetEase Games, expressed excitement about bringing the “Destiny-caliber experience” to mobile devices. He says:
“Destiny is an incredible franchise with a passionate and dedicated global fanbase. As huge fans ourselves, we are humbled and thrilled for the opportunity to bring gamers an action-packed RPG shooter set within the Destiny universe.”
Meanwhile, Bungie’s creative lead Terry Redfield highlighted the opportunity to share new stories within the rich Destiny universe. Terry says:
“For over a decade, we have built this universe to contain many unique and wonderful stories, and we are excited to see mobile gamers be able to experience this new take on the Destiny universe from the creative team at NetEase.”
The success of this alpha test will likely inform future development and release plans for the game.
