Clair Obscur Expedition 33

The upcoming RPG “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” is set to release on April 24, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. However, even before its launch, plans are underway to adapt the game into a live-action film.

According to Variety, the games’ developer Sandfall Interactive has partnered with media company Story Kitchen for this adaptation, with Kepler Interactive as the publisher. As of now, specific details regarding casting and the release date remain undisclosed.

“Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” draws inspiration from Belle Époque France, presenting a dark fantasy setting. The narrative centers on the Paintress, a deity who annually inscribes a cursed number on her monolith, causing all individuals of that age to vanish. With the number decreasing each year, humanity faces the threat of extinction. Players follow Expedition 33, a group determined to end this cycle by confronting the Paintress before she paints death again.

The game offers a blend of turn-based combat infused with real-time mechanics. Players can engage in quick-time events, timing-based actions, and real-time defensive maneuvers like dodging and parrying.

Each character in the expedition possesses a distinct playstyle, allowing for diverse strategies and character builds. The game also features a free-aim system, enabling players to target enemy weak points, adding depth to combat encounters.

Visually, the game is crafted using Unreal Engine 5, delivering stunning graphics that bring its enchanting world to life. Players will explore breathtaking landscapes, from the city of Lumière to the Island of Visages and the Forgotten Battlefield, uncovering secrets and hidden quests along the way.

The decision to develop a film adaptation before the game’s release underscores the confidence in its compelling narrative and rich world-building. The game has already garnered attention, earning a spot on DualShockers’ Top 10 Most Anticipated Indie Games of 2025 and securing cover features on both PC Gamer and Edge Magazine.

Story Kitchen also brings significant experience in game adaptations, currently working on projects like “Tomb Raider” for Netflix and Amazon MGM Studios, “Just Cause” for Universal, and “Streets of Rage” for Lionsgate.
