Square Enix has revealed some impressive news – Chrono Trigger has now sold over 5 million copies worldwide. The company shared this milestone while celebrating the game’s 30th anniversary in a recent announcement.
Released back in March 1995 for the Super Nintendo, this time-traveling RPG has built quite a following across different gaming platforms over the past three decades. The 5 million figure includes all versions released for SNES, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, PC, and mobile devices.
Looking at the breakdown, the original SNES release makes up about 2.31 million of these sales, with Japan absolutely loving it at 2 million copies. The Nintendo DS version, which added some cool extra content, contributed around 790,000 units.
The PlayStation version, particularly when bundled with Final Fantasy Chronicles, added roughly 340,000 more sales to the total. As for the more recent PC and mobile releases since 2018, they’ve likely added another 1.5 to 2 million copies, though Square Enix hasn’t given us the exact numbers.
This is a pretty significant growth from the 3.5 million copies reported in 2018. That means Chrono Trigger has sold an additional 1.5 million units in the last seven years, despite not being available on the latest gaming systems. Right now, you can’t play it on Nintendo Switch, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S. The PC is the only modern platform where fans can experience this classic.
Square Enix has also teased “various 30th-anniversary projects” planned for 2025, which has fans hoping for a modern remake or remaster. Some even wonder if it might get the HD-2D treatment that’s worked so well for other Square Enix classics.
Chrono Trigger continues to be celebrated for its innovative storytelling, following Crono and friends as they hop through different time periods to save the world. It was created by what fans call the “Dream Team” – Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy), Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest), and artist Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball).
