Castle Crashers Surprises Fans with New DLC Announcement After 16 Years

Castle Crashers

Castle Crashers, the beloved indie game developed by The Behemoth, is set to receive a surprise DLC nearly 16 years after its initial release. Titled “Painter Boss Paradise,” this new downloadable content will be exclusive to PC players on Steam.

For those unfamiliar with Castle Crashers, it’s a 2D side-scrolling beat ’em-up game that debuted on Xbox 360 in 2008. The game quickly garnered a devoted following due to its charming art style, engaging gameplay mechanics, and hilarious co-op mode.

Players control colorful knights on a quest to rescue princesses and save the kingdom, battling through hordes of enemies in the process.

Over the years, The Behemoth has consistently supported Castle Crashers. In 2015, they released a remastered version with improved graphics. This was followed by ports to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2019.

By continuing to offer new content the developers want to keep the game relevant and engaging.

What’s Included in the New DLC “Painter Boss Paradise”?

1. Steam Workshop Integration:

  • Steam Workshop integration feature allows you to create your own Castle Crashers characters, which can be brought to life within the game.
  • The developers describe this as “animating on its own like magic,” enabling players to unleash their creativity without the worry of technical constraints.
  • Moreover, players will be able to share their custom designs online and download the creations of other players.

2. New Artwork:

  • The DLC also introduces new player and weapon artwork for all characters, including enemies.

3. New Playable Character – Paint Junior:

  • A brand new playable character, Paint Junior, is also being added to the mix. This character allows players to “create powerful art to vanquish your foes,” adding a unique twist to the gameplay.
  • Paint Junior will be available in the main Castle Crashers campaign.

It’s important to note that while the DLC brings a wealth of new content, it does not include any new levels. The focus is solely on enhancing the existing game with additional characters, artwork, and customization options.

As of now, The Behemoth has not announced a specific release date for the DLC.

The Behemoth Roadmap Unveiled

Beyond Castle Crashers, Developer The Behemoth has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for their game portfolio in YouTube Livestream:

  • BattleBlock Theater is receiving a quality-of-life update on Steam, addressing visual improvements, frame rate optimization, and bug fixes. Additionally, an Xbox Series X/S port is in development.
  • Pit People is also slated for a quality-of-life update, though specific details are yet to be announced.
  • Alien Hominid HD and Alien Hominid Invasion are expanding to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, bringing these cult classics to a new audience.

Perhaps the most fascinating announcement is that The Behemoth has teased their next game, which is currently in the prototyping phase. While it’s unclear whether this will be the long-awaited Castle Crashers 2 or an entirely new IP, it certainly gives fans something to speculate about.
