Casey Hudson’s Humanoid Origin Studio Shuts Down After Three Years

Humanoid Origin Studio

Humanoid Origin, the game development studio founded by former BioWare veteran Casey Hudson, is officially shutting down. The closure comes just three years after its inception and before the studio could launch its debut game.

The studio had been working on an ambitious new sci-fi intellectual property (IP), but details about the project remain undisclosed. It is unclear how far development had progressed before the sudden shutdown.

Reasons Behind the Closure

The closure was announced via a LinkedIn post, where Hudson cited “broader challenges in the industry” and an “unexpected shortfall of funding” as the primary reasons. The gaming industry has faced significant turbulence in recent years, with many independent studios struggling to secure adequate financial support.

In the statement, Hudson expressed his disappointment: “We’re heartbroken that we will not be able to bring our new science-fiction universe to completion. Our main concern at this time, however, is for our team, and we are committed to supporting them in their transition to new employment.”

He further praised the team for their dedication and creativity: “In our time together, the team achieved incredible progress and demonstrated that it’s possible to do amazing work while fostering a culture of fun and creativity. We thank them for their talent, courage, and friendship.”

Casey Hudson’s Legacy in the Gaming Industry

Casey Hudson is widely known for his contributions to the gaming world, particularly as the director of the original Mass Effect trilogy. He also played a key role in the development of classic titles like Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

After leaving BioWare in 2014, Hudson returned briefly as General Manager, overseeing projects like Anthem. However, he departed again in 2020, leading to the establishment of Humanoid Origin in 2021.

A Broader Industry Issue

The closure of Humanoid Origin highlights the ongoing financial instability within the gaming industry. Even studios led by seasoned veterans face immense challenges in securing funding and sustaining operations. Independent developers are not the only ones struggling; even major studios under corporate umbrellas have faced layoffs and restructuring.

BioWare itself experienced significant layoffs in recent years, with approximately 50 developers let go in 2023, just ahead of the highly anticipated release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
