Capcom is exploring the idea of bringing its classic fighting games to modern platforms.
Shuhei Matsumoto, the producer behind the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection and Street Fighter 6, revealed this during an interview with IGN at EVO 2024.
Matsumoto explained that Capcom wants to make its entire library of classic fighting games available on current consoles, aiming to reach as many new players as possible. He stated:
“We want all our classic [fighting] games to be available for modern consoles because we just want to reach as many people who may have never had the opportunity to play these games back in the day. We constantly think forward and want to make sure that it’s as accessible as possible for all audiences.”
This push is largely inspired by the overwhelming response to the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics on social media.
SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos was also re-released last month, drawing in fans who hadn’t experienced the crossover before.
Previous collections, such as the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and the Capcom Fighting Collection, have also been well-received.
Matsumoto also hinted that other fan-favorite games, such as Capcom vs. SNK 2, might be next in line for a re-release.
Capcom is currently in a strong position in the fighting game market. Street Fighter 6, the latest entry in the franchise, has been a major success, continuing to grow with a new DLC that adds more characters to its roster.
However, there’s some uncertainty about whether these re-releases will come to Xbox consoles. For instance, SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos wasn’t launched on Xbox in July, and the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection also hasn’t been announced for Xbox.
According to several reports, the issue may be related to Capcom’s MT Framework, which could be preventing some classic games from being released on Microsoft’s platform. However, Xbox and Capcom are reportedly working together to resolve this issue, aiming to bring upcoming classic re-releases to the Xbox console.
