Bohemia Interactive, the Czech game developer recently marked 15 years since its debut on Steam, reflecting on its achievements and sales milestones.
Bohemia Interactive’s CEO, Marek Spanel, shared insights on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that the studio has sold an impressive 47.2 million game units across its catalog since launching on Steam. Of these, 40.9 million were purchased directly on the platform, while the rest came from external key purchases.
The journey began in June 2009 with the release of Arma 2, a military simulation game that sold a modest 174 copies within its first 24 hours on Steam. At the time, the platform was far smaller than it is today, boasting a peak of 1.92 million concurrent users compared to the recent record of 38.3 million. This growth highlights the significant expansion of Steam and the increasing popularity of digital game distribution.
Despite the humble start, Arma 2 became a cornerstone for Bohemia. By February 2015, it had sold over 2.3 million copies globally. The game also gave rise to DayZ, a standalone product that evolved from a fan-made mod, which continues to thrive with an average of 400,000 daily active users over the past month.
Bohemia Interactive’s Arma 3 remains one of its most successful titles, surpassing 10 million units sold worldwide by 2023. Its extensive DLCs and expansions contributed an additional 11 million sales.
Spanel expressed gratitude to Valve, the creator of Steam, for providing a platform that connects developers and players worldwide. “Here’s to the power of digital distribution!” he wrote, acknowledging Steam’s role in shaping the future of gaming.
