Bloober Team, the company that recently won hearts with their impressive remake of Silent Hill 2, has announced they’re taking a big step forward by self-publishing their mysterious new game, currently known as “Project R.”

This move marks an important transition for the Polish game developer, as they’ll now handle both development and publishing through their own company branch called Broken Mirror Games. It’s a significant shift that shows how much confidence they’ve gained after their successful work on the Silent Hill 2 remake in 2024.

What We Know About Project R

While the game’s details are still mostly under wraps, we do know it’s connected to Skybound Entertainment, the company behind popular franchises like The Walking Dead and Invincible. Initially, Skybound was going to publish the game, but Bloober Team has now taken over these rights completely.

Piotr Babieno, Bloober Team’s President, has shared some interesting hints about Project R. He describes it as “a completely new type of game” while confirming it will stay true to the company’s horror roots. Fans will need to wait until 2025 for more details when the marketing campaign begins.

A Growing Success Story

Bloober Team has been steadily building their reputation in the horror game genre with titles like Layers of Fear (2016, published by Aspyr), Blair Witch (2019, published by Lionsgate Games), and The Medium (2021, self-publish).

Their recent remake of Konami’s Silent Hill 2 has been particularly successful, earning both critical and financial acclaim. It boasted an impressive 86 score on Metacritic while 95% of OpenCritic critics recommend it. On the financial front, it sold over1 million copies in just 3 days, becoming the fastest seller in franchises. The game was nominated for 5 categories in the recent The Game Awards 2024 and also won Horror Game of the Year at The Horror Game Awards.

What’s Next for Bloober Team?

The company isn’t putting all their eggs in one basket. Along with Project R, they’re working on another exciting game called Cronos: The New Dawn, set to release in 2025. This new game is described as a “twisted time travel story” with retro-futuristic visuals, and it’s generating quite a buzz among horror game fans.

This self-publishing decision is part of Bloober Team’s bigger plan for 2023-2027. They want to have more control over their games and more freedom to make creative decisions.
