According to recent data from VG Insights, “Black Myth: Wukong” has surpassed $850 million in gross revenue (before platform fees and taxes) since its debut on August 20.
In terms of unit sales, the game has sold over 18 million copies on Steam as of September 5. This success was anticipated, as Game Science, the developer behind the game, previously confirmed that it had sold 10 million copies across all platforms within its first three days.
The game’s popularity has been particularly strong in China, which accounts for 76% of its sales on Steam. While this percentage was even higher at launch, the share of international sales is steadily increasing, with the United States contributing 6% of total sales and Hong Kong taking third place with a 1% share.
“Black Myth: Wukong” has also managed to capture players’ attention, boasting an average playtime of 32 hours—indicating deep engagement from its audience.
The game is expected to perform well, as it got good reviews from both critics and gamers. Some reviews are even dubbing it the “Chinese God of War” and many already declaring it a contender for Game of the Year.
Upon its release, “Black Myth: Wukong” shattered several records. The game topped Steam’s 24-hour concurrent player count, surpassing the previous record of 2.1 million held by “Palworld” in 2024. It has since become the most-played single-player game in Steam’s history, overtaking “Cyberpunk 2077.” Additionally, “Black Myth: Wukong” achieved the second-highest concurrent player count for any game on Steam, trailing only “PUBG.” Across both PC and PlayStation 5, the game reached a staggering 3 million concurrent players in total.
Meanwhile, data on the PlayStation 5 version of “Black Myth: Wukong” remains limited. However, Simon Carless reported that approximately 3 million players have engaged with the game on PS5, with China making up two-thirds of the total. Bloomberg also highlighted that the PlayStation 5 was the best-selling electronic product on Alibaba in the week leading up to the game’s launch, reflecting the strong demand for Game Science’s breakthrough title.
As “Black Myth: Wukong” approaches the $1 billion mark, it will be interesting to see how long it takes to reach that milestone. For comparison, “GTA V” hit the $1 billion mark in just three days, while “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” took two months. While “Black Myth: Wukong” is on a similar trajectory, the coming weeks will reveal whether it can maintain its impressive performance.
