Baldur’s Gate 3 has hit an incredible milestone: as of March 19, it’s been on Steam’s Top Global Seller chart for two years straight (104 weeks). In a market dominated by free-to-play multiplayer giants and battle passes galore, this kind of staying power—especially from a premium, single-player RPG—is downright rare.

Baldur’s Gate 3 started charting before it even officially launched, thanks to a strong Early Access debut. Since then, word of mouth, stellar storytelling, deep gameplay freedom, and a complete lack of microtransactions have turned it into a modern classic that players keep coming back to.

The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 challenges the common industry belief that games need microtransactions to be profitable. The game continues to sell exceptionally well without asking players to open their wallets beyond the initial purchase.

Developer Larian Studios has played a big role in maintaining that momentum. Instead of pushing DLC or paid updates, they’ve been rolling out major free content patches, each one packed with meaningful additions. According to player feedback and surveys, these updates are a major reason the game’s popularity hasn’t faded.

We’re talking full-on feature drops—like a fleshed-out epilogue, more character endings, new combat animations, expanded dialogue trees, and gameplay tweaks like Honor Mode, which hardcore fans absolutely love. Every update adds new depth, encouraging players to dive back in and try new builds or story paths.

Larian’s approach has earned them a ton of goodwill. While many studios chase the live-service trend with seasonal passes and gated content, Baldur’s Gate 3 stands out by doing the exact opposite—and the community has noticed.

Looking ahead, Patch 8 is currently in stress testing and scheduled to launch later this year. It’ll be the final major content update. Players can expect a long-requested photo mode, cross-platform multiplayer, and eight new subclasses that mix D&D tradition with Larian’s signature flair.

After Patch 8, Larian plans to shift its focus to a new, still-unannounced “best work ever” project. Future Baldur’s Gate 3 updates will be limited to bug fixes—but if current sales are anything to go by, players aren’t ready to move on just yet.
