Atlus' Metaphor: ReFantazio Adapted into Manga

Atlus‘ popular RPG Metaphor: ReFantazio has been officially adapted into a manga, bringing its rich fantasy world to life in a new format. The first chapter is now available to read digitally in English on Manga Plus by Shueisha, while in Japan, it is featured in V Jump magazine.

The manga is illustrated by Yoichi Amano, known for his work on the Dragon Quest Treasures adaptation. This latest project closely follows the game’s storyline, using the canonical name “Will” for the young protagonist. The story begins with the game’s opening ambush sequence and follows Will as he explores the Royal Capital Grand Trad, a city burdened by prejudice. Flashbacks offer a deeper look into his past, making the adaptation familiar to fans of the game.

However, the manga is not a direct recreation of the game’s events. Notably, it alters the way Will meets the fan-favorite character Strohl, hinting that other character interactions may also be reimagined. This creative approach suggests the manga will provide fresh perspectives while staying true to the game’s core themes.

Fans can expect multiple chapters covering Metaphor: ReFantazio‘s deep narrative, which blends RPG elements with political themes in a richly developed world. This adaptation follows a growing trend of video game-inspired manga, similar to Kadokawa’s Elden Ring adaptation. Interestingly, while Elden Ring’s manga features a comedic and hopeless protagonist, Metaphor: ReFantazio embraces a more traditional storytelling approach.

The game itself has been a major success for Atlus, selling one million copies on its first day, making it the developer’s fastest-selling title. Critics praised the game for its compelling narrative, stunning visuals, and innovative gameplay mechanics. It holds an impressive Metascore of 94 on Metacritic based on 57 critic reviews. Currently, the studio has shown no interest in its sequel but the game director says still hope.

The game is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.

For those eager to explore this new adaptation, the first chapter is available now on Manga Plus by Shueisha.
