Some of the Major Highlights

Amazon Prime Gaming lineup for August 2024 is packed with a diverse range of titles that are sure to appeal to gamers of all tastes.

From action-packed shooters to thought-provoking narratives, this month’s offerings have something for everyone. Here’s a closer look at some of the highlights:

1. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

  • Platform: GOG Code
  • Release Date: Now Available

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is an action RPG that has delighted gamers since its release in 2016.

Developed by Eidos-Montréal (under Square Enix), this is 5th sequel to the Deus Ex Series that continues the story two years after the events of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Players once again take on the role of Adam Jensen, who is now working as a double agent for Task Force 29 (an Interpol-run anti-terrorist unit) while secretly serving the hacker group Juggernaut Collective to expose the Illuminati’s manipulations behind world events.

The gameplay blended first-person shooter, stealth, and role-playing elements.

The game received several award nominations and wins, including multiple Canadian Video Game Awards.

Following the acquisition of Eidos-Montréal by the Embracer Group in 2022, there has been talk about a possible revival of the series. Yet, as of now, there has been no such official announcement. According to a Bloomberg report in January 2024, the Embracer group has canceled the new Deus Ex game which is said to be in a “very very early” development stage.

2. Tomb Raider Series

  • Platform: GOG Code
  • Release Date: Now Available

This week we are getting three iconic Tomb Raider games – Tomb Raider: The Last RevelationTomb Raider Chronicles, and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, for free in Prime Gaming.

They are 4th, 5th, and 6th installments in the action-adventure Tomb Raider series respectively, and direct sequels of each other.

The gameplay sticks to the series’ tradition, featuring Lara navigating through platforming environments, while combining elements of stealth and character development.

3. Gravity Circuit

  • Platform: Amazon Games App
  • Release Date: August 8, 2024

Gravity Circuit is a flashy action-packed 2D platformer, offering a futuristic adventure with a unique twist.

It follows Kai, a war hero with the power of the Gravity Circuit, as he battles through a world inhabited by sentient robots.

4. Loop Hero

  • Platform: Epic Games Store
  • Release Date: August 8, 2024

Loop Hero is a critically acclaimed indie game developed by Russian studio Four Quarters.

Set in a world destroyed by an evil lich, the hero/main protagonist awakens in a small camp on a looping path. The player’s goal is to rebuild the world by strategically placing landscape cards around the hero’s path. As the hero automatically walks the loop, they encounter and fight enemies, collect resources, and gain equipment.

The player doesn’t directly control the hero but instead influences the world around them, creating a unique blend of roguelike, deck-building, and strategy elements.

The received “generally favorable” reviews upon release, with critics praising its innovative mechanics, 80s-inspired aesthetic, and the freedom it offers players to create unique worlds. It garnered an 82/100 on Metacritic for PC and was nominated for several awards, including “Best Independent Game” at The Game Awards 2021.

5. Trek to Yomi

  • Platform: Epic Games Store
  • Release Date: August 8, 2024

Trek to Yomi, released in 2022, is a side-scrolling action-adventure game set in the Edo period of feudal Japan (after the Assassin’s Creed Shadows period, just saying).

Players control Hiroki, a young swordsman on a quest for vengeance after his village is destroyed.

The game’s narrative takes Hiroki through the Japanese underworld of Yomi, confronting supernatural forces and his own past.

Gameplay focuses on side-scrolling combat with light and heavy katana attacks, blocking, and counter-attacking, while also featuring exploration segments and unlockable weapons.

The game’s striking black-and-white visuals and cinematic style, heavily inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s samurai films, received widespread praise. However, Trek to Yomi garnered mixed reviews from critics, who lauded its aesthetic presentation but found the combat, exploration, and narrative elements somewhat lacking.

Despite these criticisms, the game’s unique visual approach and atmospheric setting were generally well-received, making it a noteworthy entry in the action game genre.

6. Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition

  • Platform: Amazon Games App
  • Release Date: August 15, 2024

Following the inclusion of Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition last month (still have 15 days until Aug 17 to claim it), Prime Gaming has now offered the sequel for free this month.

Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition is a remastered version of the classic role-playing game Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn and its expansion, Throne of Bhaal.

Set in the Forgotten Realms continent of Faerûn, the game follows the protagonist’s journey through the nations of Amn and Tethyr, continuing the epic story from the first game.

The gameplay adheres to 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules, featuring tactical combat, character development, and extensive dialogue options.

This enhanced edition introduces new characters with their own quests, improved graphics with widescreen support, and updated multiplayer functionality.

It also includes “The Black Pits 2: Gladiators of Thay,” a standalone challenge mode.

The remaster was generally well-received by critics, earning praise for its improved visuals, new content, and the timeless quality of its storytelling and gameplay. On Metacritic, the PC version holds an aggregate score of 78/100, with reviewers highlighting its epic narrative, memorable characters, and hundreds of hours of engaging content.

While some technical issues were noted, the game was largely seen as a successful modernization of a beloved classic.

7. Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical

  • Platform: GOG Code
  • Release Date: August 15, 2024

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical introduces players to a unique blend of storytelling and music.

Set in a modern fantasy world, players guide Grace, a college dropout who gains the powers of a Muse.

The game combines narrative-driven gameplay with musical elements, allowing players to shape the story through choices that impact Grace’s journey.

It’s a creative and refreshing take on the RPG genre that will appeal to those looking for something different.
