A Minecraft Movie has exploded onto the big screen with a massive $58 million opening day, officially making it the biggest opening day ever for a video game movie adaptation.
That figure also gives the film the biggest opening day of 2025 so far, leaping past Captain America: Brave New World, which debuted with $40.9 million.
It’s also the largest single-day debut since the record-breaking Deadpool & Wolverine release in July 2024.
Weekend Projections Skyrocket
Initial box office forecasts had the movie opening between $70–$80 million for the full weekend — but after Friday’s blowout numbers, projections have been doubled. Analysts now expect A Minecraft Movie to bring in over $150 million in its three-day domestic opening.
If those numbers hold, it would surpass The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $146 million in its debut weekend — despite launching midweek and earning $58M before the weekend even started.
Star Power + Global Appeal
The movie features a stacked cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. With that kind of star power and Minecraft’s global brand recognition, its box office success isn’t totally unexpected — especially for what might be the most popular video game of all time.
Financially, the movie is already a winner. With a production budget of $150 million, plus marketing and distribution, the film is expected to recoup its costs within its first week.
Turning Skeptics into Believers
Many fans were skeptical ahead of release, with mixed reactions to the film’s trailers. But those concerns haven’t hurt ticket sales — if anything, the curiosity may have helped. Critics have given the movie mixed reviews, but audiences are more favorable, awarding it a CinemaScore of B+. That’s not quite in the A-range for runaway hits, but it still signals strong word of mouth.
A Global Hit
Internationally, A Minecraft Movie is also performing exceptionally well — even in China, where it’s currently #1 at the box office, a rare feat for recent Hollywood films. With global numbers pouring in, the film is on track to be a worldwide blockbuster.
A Decade in the Making
Bringing Minecraft to theaters has been a long journey. Warner Bros. began developing the project back in 2014. Legendary Entertainment joined as co-producer in 2019, and director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) came aboard in 2022 to finally bring the PG-rated adaptation to life.
With the film set to become the second-highest-grossing domestic release of 2025 — behind only Captain America 4 at $197 million — it’s likely just a matter of time before it takes the top spot.
