Final Fantasy XVI Sales Reach 3.5 Million Copies Worldwide

Final Fantasy XVI

Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XVI has sold over 3.5 million copies globally since its release on June 22, 2023. This update came during the company’s latest financial results briefing, where President Takashi Kiryu shared the figures with investors.

When the game was first released, Square Enix announced it had reached 3 million units in just six days. That initial figure included both digital sales and physical copies shipped to retailers, meaning not all physical copies had necessarily been purchased by consumers at that time.

Looking at the numbers more closely, it appears the game experienced a strong launch but struggled to maintain momentum afterward. It added only 500k sales in the last 18 months.

This slower-than-expected performance aligns with previous statements from Square Enix. Last year, President Kiryu told analysts that Final Fantasy XVI, along with Foamstars and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, all fell short of the company’s sales expectations.

The game originally launched exclusively on PlayStation 5 before making its way to PC in September 2024. Square Enix has not revealed the development and marketing costs for the title, making it difficult to determine if the game has been profitable despite the millions of copies sold.

When compared to other titles in the franchise, Final Fantasy XVI’s performance appears modest. Final Fantasy XV set a franchise record with over 5 million copies shipped on its first day. Similarly, Final Fantasy VII Remake sold more than 3.5 million copies in just three days after release.
